Constantia was the first wine farm in Southern Africa, established in 1685 by the VOC Governor of the Cape Simon van der Stel. When adding a new Wine and Maturation Cellar next to the Klein Constantia homestead, we did not want to create an out-of-scale building that would spoil the simplicity and elegant approach of the existing manor house.

We created a new separate approach road and chose to sink most of the building underground, which also served to keep the cellar cold and save on running costs using natural cooling. The new building provides modern functionality, while remaining sensitive to its historic environment.
